“Frequently Asked Questions”
Who, What, When, Where, Why, and More…
Who?
Established in 2008, the Friends of Highland Recreation Area is a state-registered, non-profit organization with 501 (c)(3) status, that leases the Haven Hill structures and surrounding properties within the Highland State Recreation Area from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment (MDNRE). FOHRA operates under a board of directors and officers who serve on an annual basis, comprised of representatives from throughout Oakland and Livingston County.
What?
The Haven Hill Festival is a celebration of the amazing natural and historic resources of the Highland State Recreation Area. This year’s event will include a vintage base ball game, summer foods, vintage Model A Ford cars, and walking tours of Haven Hill with a shuttle up and down the hill. The event is a fund raiser for the Friends of Highland Recreation Area.
When?
The Haven Hill Festival is to be held on Saturday, August 27, 2011 between 10 am and 4 pm. Hours will be adjusted if needed due to weather or other discretion.
Where?
The Haven Hill Festival takes place within the Highland State Recreation Area, at the Goose Meadow Picnic. Auxiliary functions will be held throughout the park. The park can be entered on Highland Road, M-59 between Duck Lake and Bogey Lake roads. The park is actually located across both Highland and White Lake Townships.
Why?
The Haven Hill Festival is a fundraiser for the Friends of Highland Recreation Area. Funds will be directed towards the operation of FOHRA, and more importantly towards the continuing effort to revitalize the historic Edsel Ford Haven Hill estate structures within the recreation area.
Cost?
The event is FREE. However, entry into the state park is now via the Recreation Passport on your license plate. Food and beverages will be sold as a fund raiser at reasonable prices.
Parking?
Parking is available at the Goose Meadow Picnic area and the surrounding entrance roads. Please park out of the roadway.
Public Safety
Police departments from each community (Highland and White Lake) are on call as needed during the event to ensure a safe and family-friendly environment for everyone. MDNRE officers are present throughout the event. The Haven Hill Festival is an alcohol-free, family-oriented event. As public safety is paramount, attendees are asked to obey all rules of the state park system.
Charitable Contribution
Each year, local charities that sponsor the Haven Hill Festival benefit from the Haven Hill event.
Economic Impact
The Haven Hill Festival is a new and growing event that will continue to positively benefit the surrounding communities now and into the future.
